SEE HOW TOMMY WHEEL BEARING PULLER REDUCES HUB REMOVAL TIMES TO ABOUT 25 MINUTES
W-H-A-C-K… Randy McDonald felt a sharp, shattering pain as the 32-ounce sledgehammer slammed into his wrist, brutally breaking the bone. While beating furiously on the back of the rear wheel bearing on a Lincoln, the skilled auto technician with more than 40 years of experience, accidentally swung wide. During his recovery, he wished there was a quicker and less painful way to remove stubborn, rusted wheel bearings.
After talking over the problem with his local mobile tool distributor, he learned about TOMMY, a wheel bearing hub puller repair kit from ProMAXX Tool.
“My distributor called up Jeff Del Rossa, the founder and president of ProMAXX,” McDonald said. “Since our shop is so close to their headquarters, Jeff came right over to show me how his TOMMY tool could help. In less than half an hour, we popped the bearing right off. This tool takes a job that lists at three hours of book time down to about 25 minutes.”

WHY ARE FORD & SUBARU HUBS SO STUBBORN?
For the past 10 years, McDonald has worked at Kudla’s Service Center in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He explained that the Northeast’s Rust Belt and the Midwest’s cold weather conditions, road salt saturation, and corrosion build up makes it hard to pull wheel bearings on many Ford and Subaru models.
“I’ve seen hubs go bad in the first few years of a vehicle’s life. I recently had to use TOMMY on a 2019 Impreza with only 42,000 miles on it.” McDonald said. “I think the Ford and Subaru problem is due to a combination of the bearings’ metallurgy and the fact that the spindle goes in 3/4 of an inch while the GM only goes in a 1/2 inch. GMs don’t seem to give me as many problems.”
Currently, there are TOMMY kits available for Ford, Subaru, and a Ford/Subaru Combo Kit. However, ProMAXX Tool has additional versions in the works that will repair dozens of different vehicles, including electric.
Unlike other tools on the market that pull at an angle, TOMMY removes the bearing by using three robust push rods to triangulate the force. This delivers a tremendous amount of energy and pulls the bearing out straight, just like it was installed. TOMMY has proven to be a popular tool that removes wheel bearing hubs quickly without damage to the CV, knuckle, or the need for an expensive alignment.
“The wheel bearing puller uses Grade-8 bolts to fasten the tool directly to the wheel hub, while five-set screws balance the load, making sure the hub is pulled straight out every single time,” Del Rossa said. “The primary pulling force comes from the pushrods applying a triangulated force against the backplate. It takes only a few minutes to bolt the tool to the wheel hub, and it may take less than three minutes to pull the bearing free.”
McDonald said that before acquiring the TOMMY tool, he would typically use a hammer to beat out the bolts on the back of the hub. It could take three or four hours of pounding per hub. “If you want to go crazy on it like an animal and just use a sledgehammer, good luck. But, you could easily break the spindle. That can cost the customer more money and may mean the shop loses repeat business.”
TOMMY is the superior tool to remove wheel bearing hubs quickly without damage to the CV, knuckle, or creating the need for an expensive alignment. By adding TOMMY Rail to the tool system’s unique triangulated pushrods and heavy-duty assembly, Tommy easily handles the additional pulling power it was engineered for.
RAIL ACCESSORY ADDS EVEN MORE POWER
To give even more pulling power to TOMMY, ProMAXX Tool developed the TOMMY Rail Accessory. TOMMY Rail adds another point of contact between the TOMMY assembly and the wheel bearing flange, creating the ability to handle even greater loads. This applies enough force to pull the wheel bearing no matter how tough or rusted.
“TOMMY Rail is crafted from solid, hard-coated American aluminum,” Del Rossa said. It attaches to the outside of the lower push flange, creating a powerful structural link similar to an automotive rear-end four-bar linkage setup. The four-bar linkage was developed to handle increased horsepower at the rear wheels for both street and track applications. Adapting that technology to our TOMMY Wheel Bearing Puller, we’ve given TOMMY the ability to handle even more pulling power than before.”
The TOMMY Rail Accessory can be purchased separately. Additionally, the ProKit Plus versions of TOMMY Ford, Subaru or Combos come with the Rail accessory included.
TECH PRODUCTIVITY SOLUTIONS
Like many of ProMAXX Tool’s productivity solutions, the Tommy allows technicians of all skill levels to quickly make the fix. This frees up experienced technicians to work on more complex, money-making repairs.
“One of our other techs saw me using the TOMMY and he was curious,” McDonald said. “So, I showed him how easy it is to use. It’s pretty cut and dry. Now, the guy can quickly pull these hubs himself. Sometimes we use TOMMY twice a week.”
McDonald believes his shop’s investment in the TOMMY was well worth it. “This tool pays for itself after just a few repairs,” he said. “Wow…every time you use it after that is pure profit!”
