The real workhorse of Wyoming’s ranchers and roughnecks does not have four hooves and a tail, it comes equipped with the Ford Power Stroke engine. Whether hauling hay or carrying crews and equipment to the oilfields, the owners of these heavy-duty trucks cannot afford to let them sit idle in the shop with engine problems.
With more than 34 years of technician experience, Rory Eckhardt is the owner/operator of Glenrock, Wyoming’s Renegade Off-Road & Driveline Repair. “We don’t see many regular road vehicles in the shop. But, we do service a lot of work trucks," he said.
Most of the work trucks that Eckhardt services with fuel injector issues are Ford, Chevy and Dodge diesels. He’s also seen an increase in Cummins-powered vehicles in the past few years, a testament to the reliability of these engines. Every truck that comes into the shop gets a complete inspection, a full diagnostic test, and a repairs list that prioritizes the most important items first.
With access to a wide variety of aftermarket and replacement parts, Eckhardt and his team are able to get customers back on the road quickly. “It’s not usually a nice drive out to the oil fields," Eckhardt said. "Months of repeated rough rides build up lots of packed dirt and rust under the hood.”
Simple Fix To Busted Power Stroke Fuel Injector Bolts
Recently, Eckhardt’s largest customer, a roustabout crew that specializes in welding, brought him their 2013 Ford F350 Super Duty to fix. Following an initial inspection, it became clear that two fuel injector bolts were busted. After talking it over with other technicians, the consensus seemed to be that the best way to make the repair was to pull the cylinder head.
Eckhardt knew there must be a more economic and timely way to get the job done. He wanted to save his customer money by delivering value. Besides, the quicker he could get the roustabouts’ truck back to work in the oil patch, the sooner his customers could make money.
Looking online for a better way, Eckhardt came across
ProMAXX Tool’s Power Stroke Repair Kits. After quick shipping of the tools, his tech easily completed the on-the-truck repair without removing the cab or cylinder head.
SAVING CUSTOMERS TIME & MONEY
“Following the included instructions, my tech had both bolts out in about two hours,” Eckhardt said. “Without the kit, it would have taken more than 20 hours to remove the cab and the cylinder head, send the head to a machine shop, return it, and complete the rest of the job. By significantly reducing the repair time, we saved our best customer more than $3,000 in real dollars. But, more importantly, we saved them over a week of vehicle downtime.”
He explained that the roustabout welders’ truck was so important to their business they probably would pay anything for a repair. Since Eckhardt’s business philosophy is to always take care of his customers, he brought them into the shop and showed the time and money savings by using the Power Stroke Repair Kits. After that, the roustabout crew became customers for life.
How The ProMAXX Fuel Injector Repair Tool Works
This entire repair is straightforward. Simply remove the fuel lines and fuel injectors on the engine side set for the repair. Then, the ProMAXX Tool 6.7L Fuel injector Puller, which features both a lift and hammer kit, easily pops out the injector.
The techs at Renegade Off-Road & Driveline Repair save their customers time and money with the Power Stroke Repair Kit.
6.7L FUEL INJECTOR PULLER SPEEDS UP REMOVALS
Because the ProMAXX puller does not need to be bolted and unbolted to the cylinder head, technicians reduce injector removal times by more than 50 percent. Plus, the added benefit of a slide hammer allows technicians to tension the injector with the lift kit, then shock it with the hammer. This causes even stubborn injectors to come free.
Once the tool is anchored in the head, precision drill bushings and USA-made grade provides quick and easy machining of the broken fastener—on the truck, without unnecessary steps and wasted effort in time and money.
To finish off the repair, the bolt removal kit includes a precision, machine-tooled ProTap to restore the threads to factory new specifications. “We followed the instructions precisely, moving through the series of bits and taps, chasing the threads to clear any remaining debris,” Eckhardt said. “These machine-shop grade tooling bits are awesome!”
FOUR-PIECE COMBO KIT SAVES $250
Realizing the importance of Ford 6.7L engines to the region, Eckhardt purchased the Power Stroke - POWER Package from ProMAXX Tool. This combination collection not only boosts productivity, it delivers nearly $250 in savings. The POWER Package consists of four Ford 6.7L kits: EGR Bolt Repair, Fuel Injector Bolt Repair, Exhaust Manifold Bolt Repair and the PowerPull Fuel Injector Puller.
“I know we’ll see a lot more of these kinds of repairs in the near future,” Eckhardt said. “I don’t mind buying tools to help make my techs’ lives easier. I wish we had these kits when I first started out. We just had to learn as many tips and tricks from the old guys as we could.”
KITS DELIVER NEWLY FOUND EDGE
Thanks to these Power Stroke kits, Eckhardt believes that a skilled, B-grade tech can use them to be more productive in the shop and turn jobs quickly. “You can tell that ProMAXX did their homework when they developed these tools. Jokingly, I’m hesitant to recommend them to other shops because of how great they work. I don’t want to give the competition the secret of my newly found edge.
Once the tool is anchored in the head, precision drill bushings and USA-made grade provides quick and easy machining of the broken fastener—on the truck, without unnecessary steps and wasted efforts in time and money.
