Custom Tooling Triumph: ProMAXX Tool's Innovative Solution And Superior Customer Support Saves Lafayette Ford
Recently, James Melvin, Parts & Service Director at LaFayette Ford in Fayetteville, North Carolina found himself in a challenging situation. A technician at his shop was tasked with removing a broken crankshaft bolt. To make matters worse, the broken fastener also included a broken spiral cone screw extractor inside the crankshaft bolt.
In response to LaFayette Ford’s distress call, ProMAXX Tool Technical Consultant Kelly Bails quickly brainstormed an idea with ProMAXX Tool Founder, Jeffrey Del Rossa, to devise an innovative custom tooling solution.
“Kelly has always been spot on. I never need to worry about anything with her,” said James Melvin.
The team at ProMAXX Tool engineered a solution utilizing an existing Crankshaft Repair (CSR) Kit. First, they modified the kit by adding additional guide bushings to address the added complexity of a broken screw extractor.
“A broken crankshaft bolt is a disaster in and of itself,” said Jeffrey Del Rossa. “But adding a broken extractor to the mix can only mean pulling the engine for a complete and costly engine tear-down and rebuild.”
Then, they opted to make a custom solid-carbide tooling (drill bit) in a 125mm length to accurately dimple the broken bolt. This allows a tech to center punch the crankshaft bolt with an off-center, hardened-steel broken bolt extractor. It delivers precision boring, and re-establishes the center, providing sequential steps to remove both the bolt and the broken extractor at the same time.
PROMAXX TOOL’S CUSTOMER SERVICE TAKES OVER ON CRANKSHAFT REPAIREmphasizing the quality of the company’s customer service, ProMAXX Tool explained the plan thoroughly, making sure the technician understood the process and the potential outcomes. The ProMAXX Tool team worked quickly to ship the modified Crankshaft Repair Kit overnight to LaFayette Ford.
With the custom CSR Kit in hand, the LaFayette Ford tech reached out to Kelly and Jeffrey to ensure he was following the correct application of the modified tool kit. The ProMAXX Tool team demonstrated its commitment to superior customer success by providing step-by-step guidance through unlimited technical support service.
The operating tech, guided by ProMAXX Tool's expertise and support, proceeded with specialized, carbide-tipped tooling (drill bit) to successfully maintain the necessary precision to get the job done right. By the end of the job, significant progress had been made.
“It saved the day,” said James Melvin.

The technical expertise, exceptional customer service, and especially the unlimited tech support from ProMAXX Tool enabled them to successfully drill out the crankshaft bolt with a broken extractor while preserving the engine. They drastically reduced the repair time, avoided a costly engine replacement, and saved the dealership and the customer time and money!
Deeply appreciative of the help he received, LaFayette Parts and Service Director kindly posted a glowing review of his positive experience with ProMAXX Tool on Google.

Additional Tips For Crankshaft Bolt Repair
When removing a crankshaft bolt, here are some additional tips to ensure a successful and safe operation. First off, safety should always come first. Make sure the vehicle is securely supported on jack stands, and wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection. Secondly, consult the manufacturer's specifications or repair manual to determine the recommended torque specifications for the bolt, as using the wrong tools or methods can lead to damage.
Additionally, it's often necessary to immobilize the crankshaft to prevent it from turning while removing the bolt. Be cautious of the direction in which the bolt should be turned, as it can be counter-clockwise in some cases. Lastly, use high-quality tools, as excessive force or inadequate equipment can result in bolt damage or personal injury. Taking these precautions into account will help ensure a smooth and safe crankshaft bolt removal process.
