HOW TO MAKE A BROKEN BOLT REPAIR IN 25 MINUTES ON FLEET VEHICLES USING ADAPTABLE STUD REPAIR KIT
Technicians tasked with servicing a large fleet of vehicles depend on a tool chest full of versatile, productivity-enhancing solutions. Commuters who count on these vehicles to carry them from their homes to their jobs and back require reliable, safe, well-maintained transportation.
Wes B. is a certified diesel technician with more than 11 years of experience. As part of a team that focuses on fleet maintenance, he chooses tools that eliminate risk, deliver repeatable results, increase productivity, and save time.
“I need to be able to quickly turn around whatever comes into the shop, but I specialize in repairing buses,” Wes said. “Most of our transit bus fleet is powered by Cummins L9 inline six-cylinder engines.”
QUICK, REPEATABLE BROKEN BOLT REPAIRS
In a large, heavy vehicle with six cylinders, exhaust manifold bolts break, which often leads to reduced fuel efficiency, poor vehicle acceleration and blown head gaskets. To ensure quick, easily repeatable repairs, Wes uses ProMAXX Tool’s Bullit® Adaptable Broken Bolt Extractor Tool Kit.
The Bullit guide plate has adjustable carriages that allow the tool to configure to the exact dimensions of just about any linear bolt pattern, eliminating machine tolerances. The three fasteners included in the kit are used to mount Bullit directly onto the cylinder head. Using the spanner wrench, locks the sliding carriages down, replicating the bolt pattern precisely, delivering dead-on-center drilling accuracy.
The carriage plate, multi-sized bushings, and drill bit steps allow for the Extractorless™ removal of a variety of broken fasteners, including bolts on exhaust and intake manifolds, oil pans, water pumps, and more.
The Cummins ISX version of the Bullit features carriage adapters that lift the ProPlate up to clear all obstructions specific to Cummins ISX engines. Adding to its versatility, a series of enhancement kits that include different-sized fasteners, bushings and drill bits can be added to help technicians make repairs on a variety of engines and bolt sizes ranging from 8mm, 3/8-inch, 10mm, ISX, and 12 mm multiple pitches.
Bullit works on multiple engine types including standard trucks, cars, and buses as well as Class 8 heavy duty diesel engines such as over the road tractor trailers, construction equipment, agricultural, and even marine engines.
DRILLING BOLTS FREEHAND CAN BE DANGEROUS
“Before I got the Bullit, I used to try and drill broken bolts out freehand,” Wes said. Working on buses, it is tough to get into a good position on top of the engine to drill, and it is difficult to see the bolt. This is how mistakes happen.
“If you don’t get a good center punch and you’re off just a bit, you could drill into the head or pierce the water jacket, meaning the entire head has to come out,” he said. “It can also lead to a nightmare of broken-off extractors and drill bits.”
To prevent these problems, the key is preparation. According to Wes, before drilling, the hole should be tapped and cleaned, and the broken bolt surface should be flattened. Once prepped, it is relatively easy to attach the guide plate and drill without issues.

The Bullit is built to service virtually anything including import engines, vintage engines such as Ford®, GM®, Dodge®, and even heavy-duty class 8 engines such as Volvo®, Caterpillar®, Cummins®, Detroit Diesel®, International®, John Deere®, Kubota®, and more.
“It takes me about ten minutes to prepare the hole. Then, using cutting oil and the Bullit kit, I can drill out the broken bolt in about five minutes,” Wes said. “The entire process only takes about 25 minutes. And, if there are multiple broken bolts, it is easy and quick to move the plate from hole to hole.”
The experienced tech claims the Bullit’s biggest advantages are that it saves time, increases productivity, and eliminates risk of drilling off-center. Since he has had the kit in his shop, he has used it more than 10 times to repair buses and get them back on the road. This is a win-win of getting assets back on the road and delivering safe, reliable transportation for all customers.
“You’ll learn over time that the guide plate is very user-friendly,” Wes said. “ It takes away the fear of drilling off center. It prevents mistakes and allows less experienced techs to repair broken bolts without worry.”
HEAVY DUTY BROKEN BOLT REPAIR
Ryan Buttazzoni is a heavy duty, off-road and on-road, Red Seal-Certified mechanic with more than 15 years experience working on forestry, construction, and mining equipment in Hinton, Alberta, Canada.
“I bought the Bullit Universal Bolt Extractor Kit and it’s awesome! I just used it to get two broken studs out on a John Deere 6068 FT4 engine and it worked perfectly,” Buttazzoni said.
“I’ve done this same job four other times without the tool, and it was a real pain,” he said.
From fleet maintenance to heavy duty diesel, the Adaptable Bullit Kit hits the bullseye for innovation, versatility, and tech productivity.
